Currently, the requirement for social workers to register is voluntary. The Social Workers Registration Board (SWRB) registers show 2,866 social workers are registered. SWRB is currently consulting (closes 1 July) on whether the current voluntary registration provides sufficient protection for the public or whether mandatory registration would provide better protection.
